In the shallow end of the pool

Photobucket

Ready or not, here it comes! It's time for What I Learned This Week over at Musings of a Housewife. So, what did you learn this week?

"There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who like Neil Diamond and those who don't." (Bill Murray, What About Bob)

So true, so true. But for this blog's purposes, I'll be adding a sub-category. Those who are deep thinkers and those who are not.

There are some bloggers who are amazing wordsmiths that find depth and meaning in what would otherwise be a mundane event. Take Billy Coffey's blog for example. The guy can pull meaning out of anything and do it in a way that will leave you in awe. If you haven't read his blog before, you really should. Really deep stuff.

Then there are those who are more along the lines of Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey. Funny, but definitely in the shallow end of the pool.

If you've ever read my blog before, you know where I fall.

This is not to say that I'm not an intelligent person. Actually, I'm quite bright. I just don't think or write in a deep and meaningful way. That's not who I am. And I've been learning that that's okay.

Alright, I'll admit that I'm incredibly a bit jealous of the deep swimmers. They have an amazing gift that I admire. But God gave me a gift, too - the gift of finding the laughter in everyday events. It's not a gift for the faint of heart. Nope. Because with that gift comes the added bonus of a lot of potentially embarrassing situations for you to find the funny in, also known as excellent blog fodder. So that's what I get to share with you here - the lighter side of life. I think it makes for a nice balance, don't you? C'mon in. The wading pool is fine.

Want more of the lighter side? Check out the Life is Funny blog carnival. Arm floaties are not required.

I'm not a prolific writer of my deep thoughts, either. As soon as I get into ankle-deep water, I'm distracted and decide to run through the sprinkler instead of go in the pool. I believe I was put here to make the Billy Coffeys and even Jack Handeys of the world look even better than they already are. How's that for a cop-out?

But I still need the arm floaties.

I am sure you have deep thoughts. But that doesn't mean your writing style would share them as such. And like you said, that is okay. God gave us each unique gifts. Yours is the ability to make people smile from the very first sentence. That is no less important than Billy's ability to make us think about the extraordinary within the ordinary.

It's fun to swim in the shallow end...that's where all the games are played ! You stay right where you are- it works because it's YOUR gift!

I disagree, Wendy. I think you are a deep swimmer. I also think you are considering venturing out into the deep end. I know, it's scary. I do it, then I venture back to the shallow end, and that's okay.

No risk it, no biscuit - right?

I prefer to think that there are 10 kinds of people, those that understand binary and those that do not.

I'm a pretty shallow swimmer as well. I'm sure we'd get along fine! LOL

I'm obviously in the shallow end as well!

I just post big pretty pictures and hope no one notices the lack of words...

Leave it to Katdish to hear you out and issue a challenge. You should listen to her. After all, she's made Billy who he is today. (Not really, but you gotta admit that she is a force to be reckoned with.)

I lean toward the shallow end. And sometimes I feel jealous of the depth of others' writing and TRY to write deep. That never works for me.

I do best when I simply write what God tells me to, funny or deep or absurd or random.

I'm still surprised that he often tells me to write funny, shallow stuff. But he does, so I try to just go with it.

Not a Neil Diamond fan, and not a deep writer either.

Occasionally I dip my toe in the deep end, then think better of it and return to the comfort of the shallows :)

I can't swim so I stay where I can just dip my toes. The world needs all kinds, right? At least that's what I tell myself.

BTW I laughed so hard at all of the moving to the South tips. I am a California girl who has found herself in Knoxvegas, and I will saythe bits about driving are absolutely true!

The Fat Dietitian - That article was hysterical! They are such funny creatures.

Oh fine, I'm wonderful.

Seriously, I'm in awe of people who can use words to make other people laugh. They astound me. Writing something that makes people go "Hmmm..." is nowhere near the feat of making them double over in laughter.

That said, I threw Katdish into the deep end and she made it back in one piece. I'm sure you would do just fine, too.

loved your post too funny

Ahem. Let me try this again.

I tend to be a deep thinker. But I've learned that I need to surround my self with people who pull me up for air and make me play and laugh a lot. Otherwise I start to drown. :)

I thought it was just me that found snack in my bra. Good to know I'm in good company!

I'm with you...any deep thoughts on my blog come from quotes or, occasionally, my kids. ;)
