Hair today, gone tomorrow

It's time for another round of "What I Learned This Week" over at Musings of a Housewife. What did you learn this week?

This week has been all about hair. It came and went, both the week and the hair.

I took my daughter in on Friday to get her hair cut before school starts this week. She's been growing it out in order to donate it to Locks of Love. We've been through this once before, so she knew what she was doing. She's been pretty excited to get it cut and to donate it, but truth be told, I think she loves the attention she gets from such a dramatic hairstyle change.

While my daughter was happy as a clam to sit there and have her hair cut, I sat there with a lump in my throat. My baby's hair was getting cut off! I know, I know. It'll grow back. It just seems like her hair is such a part of her, and now most of it was going away. I won't miss the tangles when brushing it, but I will miss playing with it. She does look awfully cute with her little bob cut though...

Some of you may remember me writing about my dad a couple of weeks back. His hair has been falling out quite a bit lately, so on Sunday he'd decided he was done with it. My sister and I were over at my folks house, so my sister volunteered to shave his head. We all went outside and what was left of his hair started coming off. We made jokes about how white his scalp was and tried to talk him into keeping a mohawk for a while (for some reason he didn't go for that), but there was that lump in my throat again. It was hard watching the hair go. Hard watching the changes that cancer was making. But this, too, will grow back. And in case you're wondering? The eyebrows are still very much intact.

So what did I learn this week? It looks like I'm more attached to other people's hair than they are themselves. It's only the hair that's gone, and even that is just temporary. My daughter looks adorable in a bob cut and my dad has superglue holding his eyebrows on. And in the future, I should probably find something else to do besides watching people get their hair cut. I just can't handle the drama!

It's just hair. Good thing she didn't donate that sweet smile! Give her a hug for me. What a beautiful child, inside and out.

I love, LOVE the big girl haircut! Is this the precious face that stares at me from your profile pic on Twitter? She's a cutie!

What a thoughtful girl you are raising to help with Locks of Love!

How's your Dad feeling?

wow what a change, she looks cute both ways. my mother wanted my hair to be long. she didn't want me to cut it. i cut really short when i got older. it will be hard having my sons hair cut when he turns 3. i will really miss it.

My oldest has long hair. It was down to her butt and getting a little bit frayed so I sent my wife with her for a good cut. I suggested 8 inches, which is what they need for locks 4 love, and she came home with a good foot off. It went from her but to just below her shoulders. I could have been ok if I knew that was coming, but I was expecting mid back. Oh well, it is down to her lower back already. Her hair grows fast just like mine so I won't stress too much.

Your daughter is adorable.

Think of all the nice hats you can get for your dad now. Really. My daddy loved his grey baseball cap.

My oldest daughter donated her hair when she was younger and now my youngest wants to do that very same thing.

I think it's commendable because it teaches them to do something for some one other than themselves and it's a great part of their personal testimonies as well.

My daughter just recently got her hair cut for school starting. It was hard for me, no lump in my throat, but I did try to talk her out of it. I don't know why I'm so attached either -other than I have none of my own to worry over. :)

What a GREAT haircut! And donating to Locks of Love is such a compassionate thing for her to do. I think it's wonderful your sweet little one already thinks of others. What an angel you are raising.

Does she get that from her dad?

I'm just kidding. No, really, I am. Let's be friends again.

She is absolutely adorable!!! I love the bob! What a big girl to donate her hair for such a good cause. I've donated my hair twice in the last couple of years to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program, but now I might be too old to pull off having long hair ;-)

My prayers are with your dad (and the rest of you)

I love her new haircut! And she looks so proud to donate to Locks of Love.

My MIL was just diagnosed with lymphoma and is starting her chemo treatments this week, so I get where you're coming from. My thoughts and prayers will be with your family.

Many thoughts for you dad.

Her hair so cute! I've had Bailey's hair short for a couple years but the screaming when I combed it brought the authorities out to see if I was killing my child, nope, just combing her hair!
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
